Invercargill Attractions & things to do

Aurora Australis - Southern Lights
Aurora Australis - Southern Lights
To our local iwi, Kāi Tahu, Aurora Australis is known as Ngā Kahukura o Hine-nui-te-pō - The Cloaks of the Goddess of Night
One of the best things to do in Invercargill is to see the Aurora Australis, a sensational light phenomenon otherwise known as the Southern Lights
Invercargill, like many places in this part of the country, has incredibly clear skies with little or no light pollution to speak of
This makes it a perfect place to see the effects of the solar wind on Earth’s magnetic field. Between April and the end of September is usually the best time of year to see this breathtaking light show. Dress warm and take your camera!
Real-Time Forecasts
The aurora is an unpredictable event. Check whether the lights will be active before you head out; you can track solar winds and get real-time forecasts on the Aurora Admin website
You can also connect with local night-sky watchers and see live sightings in the New Zealand Aurora Australis Facebook Group .

Oreti Beach
Ōreti Beach
Invercargill boasts some magnificent beaches really close to town, and Oreti Beach is definitely one of those. About 26 km long, our beach is characterised by hard-packed sand that you can actually drive on!
Swimming, surfing, windsurfing, walking, kayaking, beach cricket, sandcastling and more. Also known for being a great spot to capture an amazing sunset.

Bill Richardson Transport Museum
Literally a 5-minute walk away from here, you could spend the whole day exploring this Vast automotive museum, which showcases vintage motors & old fashioned petrol pumps with kids play areas.
Take a rest and a bite in the Grille Cafe, where the amazing 70s replica lounge and kitchen will keep your in awe, and the kids will busy in the adjacent LEGO room, and play area for the little ones

Queens Park
Queens Park
Waihopai (Invercargill) is blessed to have an 80-hectare park right in the heart of our city. Queens Park is an absolutely stunning park.
Well-manicured plots, rose gardens, a tropical hothouse with a fish pond, and even bird aviaries and animal enclosures are a big attraction for families, as are the Wonderland Castle and playground. If you are looking to exercise outside, there is a well-used fitness trail with twenty exercise stations. The
Cheeky Llama park café in the middle of the park is the ideal place to take a rest and relax while watching the kids playing in the playground
